Also called epicyclic gearing, planetary gearing has an ingenious design. The central gear is called the sun, the orbiting gears (often connected by a carrier) are called planets, and the outside gear is called the ring (an internal ring gear). The magic of planetary gearing is that either the sun, carrier, or ring can act as the input; each input possibility results in a unique output speed and direction.
